The Burlington Squadron meets weekly on Tuesday evenings at the Burlington Regional Airport in Torn Hall. Meetings are 2 hours beginning at 6:30 pm and ending at 8:30 pm. Torn Hall is the small tan building just south of the main terminal and just east of the airport office building.
- What do you do during a meeting night?
Each meeting focuses on a specific aspect of the cadet training program. On specific meeting nights we will focus the training activity on drill & ceremony, aerospace technology, emergency services, moral leadership, or physical fitness. We will also hold weekend activities to provide a more intense training session on any of the above subjects.
All cadets that have completed the first phase of training are eligible to take orientation rides in both a powered aircraft and a glider. We have a powered aircraft based in Burlington (Cessna 172) and the Iowa Wing has one glider within the state that is based at different locations within the state during the year.
Yes. the dress blue uniform is a requirement and will be ordered upon membership acceptance. Each cadet receives a basic dress uniform (head wear, shirt or blouse, pants or skirt) with his/her membership. Shoes, Insignia, ribbons, and name tags are the responsibility of the cadet.
- I see cadets wearing other uniforms. Do we have to wear those?
Although they are not required, BDU's (battle dress uniform) are worn by most cadets. These uniforms are issued on an availability basis only. The uniform must be returned if the cadet leaves the program.
It is advisable that the cadet obtain a BDU uniform to participate in the field exercises. If purchased, the cost ranges from ~$20.00 from a Military Surplus store to ~$60.00 purchased new. Prices can vary. Boots are extra and can range from $60.00 to $100.00.
- Is any other gear required?
If the cadet decides to participate in the Emergency Services program, he/she will be required to have a 24 pack . The contents are listed on the Emergency Services page of this site. The average cost is about $60 for the minimum equipment required.
For overnight activities the cadets will be required to have a 48 hour pack, which includes a sleeping bag and additional outdoor supplies and gear.
- Is it really like the military?
Yes. All cadets are expected to abide by all the military customs and courtesies. They are expected to address officers, including cadet officers, as "Sir" and "Ma'am", stand at attention, salute the flag and respect orders from superior officers just like the military. Rank is earned by cadets just like the military rank is earned.
- How will my child be protected during activities? Are the adults screened? What about the girls?
There a very strict guidelines for senior members who work with cadets. Every Senior member is given a complete FBI background check prior to be accepted as a member. In addition, every senior member is required to complete a Cadet Protection Program before he or she is allowed to work with cadets. No senior member is allowed to be alone with a cadet at any time without another senior member or other cadets present.
All overnight activities that include female cadets MUST have a female senior present throughout the activity.
